Seeds Tower, Dubai UAE
Inspired by pigeon houses spread across the Middle East, the structure is a temporary carrier of a range of endemic plant species to attract birds and visitors alike. It is simple, cylindrical form organizes a node of contemplation around a tree where the quiet interplay of shadows intercepts an auditory seance of nesting birds. its activation as a public space starts early on in the design-build process: It comes together - part by part - as a strong stance of community construction, a collaboration of Bits to Atoms with the local paper recycling company Planet Green Dubai and students of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) who have enthusiastically agreed to fabricate and assemble the installation.
Our refined Pulp Fusion recipe will be transformed into repetitive, interlocking, beam-like elements that act as louvers and protect from the sun. Their vibrancy stems from extensive experimentation in natural dyes and pigments, creating not only a visually appealing display, but also a representation of the beauty of eco-conscious design. The parts are connected with simple raffia ties allowing the structure to be reassembled on natural grounds post Dubai design week. In this afterlife location, within the passing of a few rainfalls, the pavilion will exhibit the remainder of the circular cycle of degenerative and regenerative processes; as the paper structure decomposes and the embedded nutrients are released: seeds inside the structure elements will sprout and plants grow, a 10 meters diameter ring of plant-life will be formed as a result of Dubai Design Week’s 2021 edition.
Accepting decay, not building “forever” is an important step into repairing our relation with the nature we are only a part of.
